India mines Gold

Abhinav Bindra made India proud at the Beijing 2008 Olympics winning a Gold medal in the men's 10- meter air rifle shooting competition. A remarkable achievement for Abhinav, this feat will certainly remind everyone in the country that apart from the National game (Hockey) and the prefered game (to be read Cricket), there are other games and sportsmen who need encouragement. More than encouragement - They need money to play, perform and make the country proud. Lets face the truth.

What Abhinav did today at the Olympics is something that has never happened for India. I am not saying it will take a long time for another individual Gold to be won, but the way other games are neglected or should I say other games are encouraged, it is certainly tough for sportsmen of other fields to excel and carry on in their area of interest. I hope atheletes and other sportsmen don't find it difficult for their survival. If you remember, The Flying Sikh had reached a stage in his life when he had no money for his survival. All he had was his Gold medal won in the 1958 Commonwealth Games Commonwealth Games and Asian Games Asian Games to himself. What he also had with him was a mention of his fete in one of Punjab's folk songs. He had reached a stage where he had nothing but the Gold he had won and for his survival, he had to sell it. He fought against all odds and emerged a winner. Not every athlete can do that.

Abhinav Bindra, Thank you very much for letting every in the country know that sportsmen will succeed in they are willing to and no amount of belittling will stop the winners. Thank you for shutting everyone's mouth who feel one game is superior to the other, just because a vast majority of the country watches them or because the players concerned earn a lot of money through brand endoresements. Of course, you will meet a lot of people who would still crticise saying, "What difference does it make if we have won a Gold in Olympics? India still stands 12th in the overall ranking." Let's not bother about the such people. Winners have made all the difference and India has a lot of winners to showcase.

Three Cheers to Abhinav Bindra... Three Cheers to India...
