Cognition vs Emotion

I have always wondered, what is superior, is it the ability to think that makes humans superior to other beings, or is it the ability to understand and appreciate/criticise the act of others?I could not answer to this question till now. I have always got close to the answer, but it seems to be wrong each time I get there. This is one of the few questions that I would like to answer to myself.
